RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
